Our Pacific Thrift Store has been operating for over 10 years and gained solid popularity. There is a wide variety of good-quality items, very affordable prices, and it’s a busy, well-visited place. I reached out to the general manager, Pavel Tsvirinko, with several questions about both the first store and the one that is soon to open—questions that interested me and, I believe, many others as well. An audio version of his responses can be heard at the provided link (in Russian only).
— Pavel Dmitrievich! Please tell us a bit about your first store and the one you are planning to open soon. I recently visited your first store—it’s packed with all kinds of merchandise. Do you offer discounts or sales? Is it possible to negotiate prices?
— We almost always have some kind of discounts. On Tuesdays, all items are 30% off for seniors.
— Every Tuesday?
— Yes, the discount applies every Tuesday. On Wednesdays, we have discounts for teachers and students. On Fridays, there are discounts for those who follow us on Facebook. In addition, we offer various discounts during holidays.
— Are there any privileges for volunteers?
— A volunteer is someone who regularly works 4 hours per week. They receive a 20% discount on items.
— Is that in addition to the daily discounts?
— No, only one discount applies. Any one discount. If you are a volunteer working on a day when the senior discount is active, you only get one discount—either the volunteer discount or the senior discount.
— So, it seems it’s not very beneficial for seniors to volunteer—they could just come on Tuesday and get a better deal.
— Volunteers do have an advantage: they see items before they go out on the sales floor. They have access to areas that customers cannot enter. In the sales area, you might not even have time to grab something you like before someone else takes it.
— I see. When do you plan to open the second store?
— I hope it will happen at the end of May or the beginning of June. At that day, we will have major sales. We’ll offer a large amount of merchandise at the best prices so people can come and celebrate the opening of the new store with us.
— Thank you, Pavel Dmitrievich! May God bless you and your team in this ministry!
Will the second Thrift Store open in June? This largely depends on how we all help make it happen. Volunteers are needed—many volunteers—to help set up merchandise in the store.
Some of you may wonder: Why is the Pacific Slavic Baptist Association involved in thrift stores? What do they have in common?
Slavic immigrant churches are not wealthy, even after 30–35 years in America. However, their desire to preach the Gospel throughout the world has always been strong.
More than ten years ago, the former head of the Association’s missions department, Slavik Gladysh, after studying the experience of some American churches, had the idea to open a thrift store whose profits could support missionary work and individual missionaries. After much prayer and research, the first store was opened at 6101 Watt Ave, near the Second Slavic Church.
The venture proved successful. Today, thanks to the store, the Association’s mission’s department supports 13 missionaries working in various countries, including Ukraine, Moldova, Poland, Spain, France, Argentina, and Kenya (see this page for details).
The missionary work is expanding, needs are growing, and therefore the decision was made to open another store. From previous publications, you may already know that the second store will soon open in the former 99-cent store on Greenback Lane. A week ago, I visited both our current and new stores, and the new one truly impressed me: how large it is compared to the first, how much has already been done in a short time, and how much still remains to be done.
There is a lot of merchandise—clothing, dishes, furniture, household appliances, electronics… Many items are still in piles that need to be sorted, organized, arranged, and hung. Volunteers are needed—many volunteers.
So, if you have the opportunity, please come and help as much as you can. Address of the second store: 7424 Greenback Ln, Citrus Heights, CA 95610. Working hours: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
As Lena, the assistant manager, says:
— Come even for an hour or two! Any help is greatly appreciated because the need is enormous. We need not only women’s help, but men’s as well.”
We do not work on Saturdays. However, if you gather a group and want to come on a Saturday, call me at (916) 559-5057, and we will arrange a time—I will be there to meet you.
We are also hiring staff for cashier and warehouse positions. If you are interested, come to any of the stores, take an application, fill it out, submit it, and you will later be invited for an interview.
If you come to the new store and find the doors closed, don’t be surprised. Knock loudly, and someone will come and open for you.
Please share this information wherever you can and do not remain indifferent to these requests for help. If you need additional information, call me, Olga Avetisova, at (916) 716-2950, and I will try to help you.
